In 2014 I was a typical 205lb 27-year-old male who lived off top ramen, pizza, burritos, and cheese. I lived a very active lifestyle but there was no gym or workout regiment in my life. In March of that year I moved to North Carolina for work and did only that. 70 plus hours a week and all I did in my off time was eating! Living in the South for just over a year I managed to eat enough chicken fried, gravy covered, love filled, soul food to bring myself to 228lbs by the time I moved to Grass Valley in May of 2015.
My partner and I soon after moving decided to try to clean up our lifestyles and improve our quality of life. We started with a few different fad diets that worked great for losing weight for the two or three weeks that we’d stick to them, but I always had the weakness for junk food and as a result my weight plateaued around 215 lbs. The only exercise I got at the time was at work and easy hikes with the dogs.
November 2015 a random Facebook “Suggested Page” showed up on my news feed for Crossfit Pickaxe. Crossfit had been an exercise regime I had dabbled in prior but only for a few short months and never committed to the lifestyle. That night my partner and I decided to dive into Crossfit and do it for real this time. A few weeks into our Crossfit Pickaxe journey we were challenged to the Winter Melt Off. Four brutal weeks of: extra workouts, our scheduled classes 3x a week, eating real food and lots of it I soon began to feel alive for the first time in a long time! My clothes began to fall off, my energy levels increased, my morning pains began to go away, and life was just overall better. I weighed out of the challenge at 194 lbs. and a new man. With my partner on the same path, we decided to sign up for a weekly veggie box to help keep us on track with a healthy diet to go along with our three days a week working out at Pickaxe. Our greens intake increased 4-500% and the weight continued to fall off and half way through my second Melt Off Challenge I currently am under 180 lbs. For a total of 48 lbs. lost to date!
One of my favorite things about my Crossfit PickAxe experience is working out along side varying Crossfit members. A guy could be trying to get in shape, bulk up, and be healthy. While myself on the other hand a guy trying to get in shape, slim down, and be healthy. It is awesome how we do the same workout, and with different diets we all can get different results.
Finally and most importantly I love the encouragement as well as the expertise of the Crossfit Pick Axe coaching staff. I never feel pressure to obtain PR’s when form and virtuosity could be compromised. My partner and myself feel that joining the Crossfit Pick Axe community is one of the best investments we have made in helping improve the quality of our lives. Thank you team.
